Dr. Ryan Tran, Ph.D., LMFT

I’m Dr. Ryan Tran, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California and the founder of Rise Family Counseling.
I bring together advanced clinical training in relational therapy, certification in sex therapy, Gottman Method Couples Therapy training, and a Ph.D. in Psychology with an emphasis in Organizational Psychology. My work is grounded in understanding how stress, identity, and relational patterns shape the way people connect with themselves and others.
I earned my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and completed my clinical training as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. I later completed my Ph.D. in Psychology, where I studied how systems, culture, and organizational stress impact emotional health, relationships, and behavior.

My Clinical Approach
My approach is integrative, relational, and culturally responsive. I draw from evidence-based modalities including:
-
Gottman Method Couples Therapy (Gottman trained)
-
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
-
Sex Therapy interventions (sex therapy trained)
-
Psychodynamic and insight-oriented therapy
-
Solution-Focused Therapy
I often work with clients around emotional disconnection, communication breakdowns, intimacy challenges, anxiety, and the long standing patterns that keep people stuck in their relationships and within themselves.
Rather than focusing only on symptoms, I help clients understand the emotional and relational systems underneath them how attachment patterns form, how conflict escalates, and how intimacy can be rebuilt over time.
In session, I balance insight with practical tools so clients can both understand what is happening and learn how to change it in real time.

Who I Work With
I specialize in working with:
-
Men navigating stress, identity, emotional suppression, and relational disconnection
-
Couples experiencing conflict, communication breakdowns, or loss of intimacy
-
BIPOC individuals navigating cultural identity, family expectations, and relational stress
-
LGBTQIA+ individuals seeking affirming, culturally responsive therapy
-
Clients exploring kink-affirming, sex-positive, and non-judgmental support around intimacy and sexuality
-
Individuals struggling with anxiety, burnout, or feeling emotionally stuck
-

Many of the people I work with are high-functioning on the outside, but internally feel overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure how to communicate what they need in their relationships.
Why I Do This Work
I believe therapy should be both emotionally safe and practically useful.
Clients deserve a space where they feel fully accepted—without judgment—while also receiving clear direction and tools for change.
My goal is to help clients rebuild connection: with themselves, their partners, and the parts of their lives that feel distant or strained.
That includes helping people move through emotional shutdown, rebuild intimacy, strengthen communication, and develop relationships that feel more secure and fulfilling.
